Meet Beth

Beth Smiley is IP Counsel at IP Supra, PLLC primarily focused on patent prosecution in Biotechnology. She also is involved in analyzing global patent portfolios to more clearly present concepts to clients, aiding these clients in strategic planning of their intellectual property management and acquisition. Beth sees herself as a problem solver and is detail oriented.

Beth graduated from Brown University with an Sc.B. in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics), before attending the University of Washington in Seattle where she completed her Ph.D. in Bioengineering in 1996.  Her dissertation focused on an optical (laser) technique used to characterize the molecular orientation of biomolecules at the surface of water. 

She is an experienced research scientist in Biotechnology and Bioengineering with peer reviewed research publications in protein biochemistry, tissue engineering, non-destructive surface science used in the characterization biomolecules, and creation and characterization of biomimetic systems.

Beth has her diverse experience in research and understanding of engineering that allow her to draft and successfully prosecute patent applications in the U.S. and abroad.  Her work as a Registered Patent Attorney has included, for example,  patenting mechanical inventions, women’s healthcare products, medical devices with a variety of clinical applications, RNA therapeutics, and other advances in biotechnology and medical applications.

Beth graduated from the Massachusetts School of Law in 2007 and is admitted to the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.  She has been a Registered Patent Attorney since 2014.
